Strange Beacon 2023
At every moment of their being, buoys are relentlessly subjected to the sublime force of the ocean. They act as guideposts, sometimes the only solitary object to signal danger, a pathway or something else in a seemingly endless body of water. Strange Beacon shines a light on this odd relationship between the constantly sounding buoy and the relentless forces from waves and currents. To further sonically illustrate the precarious relationship, a transmitter on the buoy sends percussive sounds, created by waves moving the sculpture, to the listener. The sounds are sent and listened to via radio waves, referencing radios use historically and currently as communication between seafaring vessels.
