Bridges have unique histories as sources of inspiration, scenes of calamity and everything in between. I made field recordings of drainage pipes which are attached to bridges and collaged these recordings with sounds associated with each bridge’s unique history. The sounds captured result from human choices happening inside vehicles such as speed, direction, and the size of the vehicle itself. These choices, all varied, but all generally happening around the parameters of speed limits, traffic laws, etc. are filtered through concrete and metal like an instrument through an effect pedal. I sift through these recordings and isolate the more assertive utterances, then combine them with others into phrases that play alongside sounds relating to the bridges’ history. I then put these sounds into a program that outputs the recordings in a semi-random order. This is played through sculptures I made from clay but also site-specific found objects from each bridge.
